Should I Use Pixel Art Or Vector Art
I am planning ahead for my current roguelike now v0 3 and thinking about the graphic mode.
Should i use pixel art or vector art. View entire discussion 17 comments r unity2d a subreddit for the 2d aspects of unity3d game development. Vector graphics aren t too hard but they aren t quite as easy to make as simple pixel art. Both pixel art and vector art are equally intensive to render. Close posted by 3 minutes ago.
Pixel art is just a subset of raster art in which very small images are created using very few pixels. I find objects animals hard to draw. Due to their vector nature these graphics are resolution independent meaning they can scale infinitely without losing their quality. Anyway vector art has infinite detail everything depends only on your monitor takes up less space etc.
Smaller creatures items are even harder. While pixels are literal blocks of an image simulating the points on your screen vectors are points lines curves and polygons on an algebraic grid. I used it for a roguelike in the past. In trying to find out what art style i want i find that almost every tile set tutorial uses pixel art.
Exporting vector art from illustrator to an image eg. These points lines curves and basic polygons are called primitives and are the basic building blocks of vector art. Pixels are most commonly used in photographs and various artworks such as digital illustrations or paintings while vectors are predominantly used for simple graphics like logos icons and fonts. Sure you re losing the scalability of the vector artwork but when bitmap and vector artwork are both shown at 100 scaling then they should look identical if they do not there s probably a flaw in your workflow.
Pixel art is the simplest honestly though the sky is the limit in how complex you can go. Most people know pixel art from old video games which had to make use of these tiny images due to the very limited capabilities of old computers. Vector art on the other hand is stored as a series of lines and shapes. Pixel art is a whole different feeling though and personally i prefer it.
Still most of the time there s not much of a difference in performance. I used both a bit in the past. 1 can you use vector art characters on top of pixel art backgrounds if so are there any examples 2. Png to use in android should not be accompanied with any quality loss.
Should i use pixel or vector art. Pixel vs vector art. So the question would really be. Is there a better way to go about this.
But usually vector art is higher resolution which usually results in larger atlases texture sheets and with more atlases you could potentially take up more memory and have more draw calls. Should i just make high resolution pixel art.
